Understanding Mammogram/ Ultrasound Findings

Many women undergo mammogram and ultrasound examinations of the breasts as part of their annual medical examinations. Occasionally, these may demonstrate some findings within the breasts. Please understand that mammogram and ultrasound studies cannot provide a diagnosis. A diagnosis of a particular breast condition is possible only when tissue is taken from the breast and examined under the microscope.

Mammogram and ultrasound scans provide clues to how serious the tissue changes might be. Based on the assessed likelihood of cancer, further tests may be suggested. For the majority of findings, monitoring with repeat x-ray studies will be recommended. However, there will be some situations for which your doctor will advise tissue removal from the area where changes are detected. Tissue removal is also known as a biopsy. You may wish to proceed to ‘biopsy’ page for more information.
