Treatment Options

If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, your treatment options are the following:

    1. Breast conservation treatment
This involves complete surgical removal of the cancer with a rim of normal tissue around it. There may be a need to assess lymph nodes in the armpit. Following surgery, radiotherapy is advised. There may also be a need for chemotherapy depending on the size of the cancer and lymph node status. You may wish to note that Dr Tan specialises in (Minimising unnecessary mastectomies) through many oncoplastic breast surgery techniques that she has developed.
    2. Mastectomy without reconstruction
This involves the removal of the entire breast, together with an assessment of the lymph nodes in the armpit. In early breast cancer with small tumours and where there are no lymph nodes involved, there may not be a need for radiotherapy. However, radiotherapy will still be recommended for patients with larger cancers having spread to the lymph nodes. Chemotherapy may also be needed after a mastectomy depending on the size of the cancer and lymph node status.
    3. Mastectomy with reconstruction
After the breast is removed, reconstruction of the breast may be performed by a plastic surgeon that Dr Tan works with. Once again, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be advised for large cancers and those with spread to the lymph nodes.
